Multi-Account Sign-In in Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is poised to get multi-account sign-in support in December 2020, as per the latest entry in the Microsoft 365 roadmap. This newly added item to the roadmap also has a caveat clarifying that the information is subject to change. This article gathers all the useful information to help you understand what Microsoft is coming up with, why it is a sought-after feature, and who all are going to benefit from its addition.

Why Multi-Account Sign-In Feature in Microsoft Teams So Important?

Microsoft Teams is a popular collaboration platform offered by Office 365. It enables workspace communication by providing text, voice, and video-based collaboration tools. It offers instant messaging and conferencing capabilities for teams to collaborate. Most users have multiple Teams accounts, and the current desktop version of Teams doesn’t allow multi-account sign-in. If a Teams user wants to switch from one team to another on their computer, they have to sign out of the current account and sign back in with different credentials. The new feature will allow users to switch between multiple accounts in Microsoft Teams.

Is This Update for Everyone?

Rish Tandon, CVP Engineering for Microsoft Teams, went to Twitter to explain that Microsoft is adding support within the Teams desktop client app to allow users to add one work/school account along with one personal account. So, this means that after the release of the multi-account sign-in support feature, users will be able to switch from their school or work account to their personal account and from personal account to school or work account. This feature will not be applicable to the users who want to switch between multiple work accounts.

Isn’t There Anything for Teams Users with Multiple Work Accounts?

“The engineering team is continuing to work on adding support for multiple accounts on desktop clients. We will first launch support for 1 work/school account and 1 personal account so users can enjoy Teams for work and personal side-by-side. Windows and MacOS support for multiple work accounts is still being worked on and will come at a later date,” the admin of Microsoft Teams user feedback forum said in response to a similar question.

This implies that there are good chances of having the same feature for multiple work accounts in the near future.
